Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT - Installing Windows 95
This information may be suitable for the Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDS and 435CDS as well.
Step 1 of 4 - DOS
First, we will DOS partition/format the hard drive.
We then add a DOS CD-ROM driver so that DOS can "see" the CD-ROM drive.
The following assumes that the hard drive is empty/erased.
1. Boot from a DOS 6 boot diskette.
2. Run FDISK.
3. FDISK: Create a primary DOS partition (sized to the hard drive size), making that partition active.
4. Boot from a DOS 6 boot diskette.
5. Run FORMAT as follows --> A:\>FORMAT C: /S
6. After the format has completed, boot from the hard drive.
7. Add a generic CD-ROM driver (OAKCDROM.SYS) and MSCDEX.EXE to DOS.
8. Boot from the hard drive.
[ The 430CDT will now see the CD-ROM drive as drive D: ]
Step 2 of 4 - Windows 95
1. Insert the 'Windows 95' CD into the CD-ROM drive.
2. Wait about 10 seconds for the CD to be recognised by the CD-ROM drive.
3. Change to drive D:
4. Run SETUP.EXE in order to start the installation process. Follow the prompts to install Windows 95.
5. At the end of installation, as instructed by Windows 95, reboot the 430CDT.
Step 3 of 4 - Getting 800 x 600 video resolution
Windows 95 is now running, but it is in 640 x 480 video resolution, not the 800 x 600 that the 430CDT is capable of.
We know need to install the proper video driver.
1. Unzip the contents (9 files) of the following ZIP file onto a diskette: chips655xx.zip
2. Place the diskette in the A: drive of the 430CDT.
3. START then SETTINGS then CONTROL PANEL
4. DISPLAY icon.
5. Select SETTINGS tab.
6. ADVANCED PROPERTIES button.
7. CHANGE button.
8. HAVE DISK button.
[ Note that box contents defaults to "A:\". ]
9. OK button.
[ A window will appear showing "Chips and Technologies, Accelerator (new)". ]
10. OK button.
[ You will hear the diskette drive being accessed. ]
11. APPLY button.
12. Remove the diskette from the A: drive.
13. OK button.
14. If you are asked if you want to change the monitor type, then click on the NO button.
[ You will be asked if you want to restart the computer. ]
15. YES button.
When Windows restarts, what happens depends on the exact version of Windows 95.
On early versions, Windows restarts in 800 x 600 video mode, and 256 colours.
On later versions, Windows switches to 256 colours, but stays in 640 x 480 video mode.
If you find yourself in the latter position, then follow the following additional instructions:
16. START then SETTINGS then CONTROL PANEL
17. DISPLAY icon.
18. Select SETTINGS tab.
19. Drag the slider from "640 x 480 pixels" to "800 x 600 pixels".
20. APPLY button.
21. You will be asked if you want to change the monitor type. Click on the NO button.
22. OK button.
23. YES button.
Step 4 of 4 - PCMCIA
I had to perform the following procedure before Windows 95 would recognise a PCMCIA card I have for a magneto-optical disk drive.
1. START / SETTINGS / CONTROL PANEL
2. Double-click on the icon named "PC Card (PCMCIA)".
3. Follow the prompts.
