Last Revised AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1745 07/28/97 TITLE: LANDesk and Add-In Adapters ISSUE When a third-party adapter, such as a video card, is added to an AST Bravo MS-T system that uses LANDesk Client Manager, the system may generate an error message when loading. The error will indicate there was a problem retrieving attributes from the device, although the system will continue to function. This issue applies to all Bravo MS-T systems. BACKGROUND LANDesk relies on Management Information Format (MIF) files and instrumentation (executable modules loaded to monitor Desktop Management Interface (DMI)-compliant devices) to provide it with details concerning the current state of the system. AST provides these modules for the devices shipped with the system. ACTION The error message displayed upon removal of the DMI-compliant device does not impair system operation. The device removal procedure is similar for all systems. The specific example presented below will familiarize you with the steps necessary to successfully remove an unneeded device. To remove the ATI Mach64 device from a Bravo MS system, perform the following steps: 1. Open LANDesk Client Manager. 2. Under the Tools option open the DMI Control Panel. 3. Scroll down to the line that indicates the mach64 device. The text of the line on the example machine reads "ATI mach64 Direct Interface CI". 4. Click File on the menu bar. 5. Click Remove Component. 6. Follow the prompts on the screen and confirm the removal. After removing the component from the Control Panel you must remove the instrumentation executable. Perform the following steps to remove the mach64-related executable: 1. Launch Notepad. 2. Open the file C:\DMI\SIA\BIN\CSERVICE.XEQ. 3. Scroll down (almost to the bottom of the file) until you reach the line that contains vid_ac95. At the beginning of this line, enter two forward slashes //. The forward slashes will comment out this line. 4. Save and exit the file. 5. Properly shut down and restart the system. NOTES For more information on DMI, feel free to browse the Desktop Management Task Force’s web site located at www.dmtf.org.
