TITLE:  CPU Upgrades and Advantage! 4066
 
 
ISSUE 
 
   The Advantage! 4066 series computers use a fixed 5 volt supply 
   and a 168 pin LIF (Low Insertion Force) socket for CPU (Central 
   Processing Unit) installation.  Not all CPU chips in this format 
   will work as an upgrade.
   
   This issue affects all Advantage! 4066 systems.

ACTION 
 
   AST Support has tested several commercially available processor 
   upgrade kits which seem compatible. One such upgrade is produced 
   by Evergreen Technologies. The processor upgrade module comes 
   with good documentation and provides a moderate (40% to 45%) 
   performance increase. Product information and a list of 
   authorized dealers is available from Evergreen's Web site at 
   www.evertech.com.
   
   To physically install the Evergreen upgrade, refer to the 
   documentation included. After the processor module is properly 
   configured and installed, it is necessary to reset the Advantage! 
   system board jumpers. The following chart indicates working 
   jumper settings for the upgrade kit tested.
   
   
   Evergreen P/N 248
   
   This module consists of an AMD 5x86-133 processor mounted to a 
   small circuit board, which supplies the proper CPU voltage and 
   allows the CPU's clock to be properly configured.
   
   For this part, set the Advantage! jumpers as follows:

NOTES 
 
   Please note the on-screen BIOS message at boot time (as well as 
   some third-party diagnostics) may not correctly report the new 
   processor. This is normal and often occurs when CPU upgrades are 
   installed in any system.
   
   Benchmarking will reveal that performance has increased and the 
   utilities included with the upgrade should provide accurate 
   processor information.

   controlled testing environment, AST can make no guarantees of 
   suitability or compatibility for any specific configuration. The 
   upgrade product mentioned in this bulletin is only used as an 
   example of third-party products which are currently available to

   or any particular brand.
   
   The consumer should verify return policies with any vendor prior 
   to upgrade purchase.
