AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1513 12/04/96
TITLE: Windows 95 and IDE Controller
ISSUE
After rebooting the system following the completion of a Windows
95 installation, the operating system will not recognize a device
installed on the secondary IDE controller.
This issue applies to the following systems: 501951, 501952,
501954, 501955, 501956, 501972, 503043, 503057, 503058, 503079,
503080, 503081-037, 503082, 503083, 503084, 503086, 503087,
503116, 503118, and 503152, 503153-037, and 503116-137.
BACKGROUND
The file MSHDC.INF disables the secondary IDE port. Data
regarding the 82371SB controller on the system board was not
included in this version of the MSHDC.INF file. This file is
included with Windows 95 version 400.950. This issue applies
ONLY to retail versions of Windows 95.
To verify the version of Windows 95, double-click on the System
icon in the Control Panel, and view the General dialog box.
Altering the CMOS Setup parameters for the IDE ports has no
effect on this issue.
ACTION
Obtain a new version of MSHDC.INF by downloading file
IDEINFUP.EXE from the Intel World Wide Web site at address:
ftp://ftp.intel.com/pub/patch/
Look for the file at the bottom of the Intel Web page.
IDEINFUP.EXE is a self-extracting file. Copy it to a temporary,
empty directory on the hard drive and execute the file. Once the
files have been extracted, execute the SW.EXE file and follow the
directions. The process executed at this point will
automatically replace the MSHDC.INF file for the user.
NOTES
Obtain further information regarding this issue by downloading
the IDEINFUP.TXT file located at the address above.
