AST RESEARCH, INC. INFORMATIONAL BULLETIN # 0019 10/14/97
TITLE: Second CPU Compatibility Manhattan P/V
SUMMARY
Several different versions or "steppings" of Pentium CPUs are
available. Manhattan P and V servers must use the proper
combination of these CPUs in order to function properly.
Some symptoms of dual processor incompatibility are: When
installing a second CPU in a Manhattan P/V system, the customer
may experience a problem booting or the second processor will not
be recognized by an operating system such as Windows NT server
3.51.
This issue affects the following systems: 501500, 501501, 501502,
501503, and 501830.
NOTES
Several different versions or "steppings" of Pentium CPUs are
available. Manhattan P and V servers must use the proper
combination of these CPUs in order to function properly.
Some symptoms of dual processor incompatibility are: When
installing a second CPU in a Manhattan P/V system, the customer
may experience a problem booting or the second processor will not
be recognized by an operating system such as Windows NT server
3.51.
The processor board MUST be a current revision to ensure proper
support for dual processors. Refer to TB# 1354 for a list of
part numbers and revision levels for the processor boards.
This issue affects the following systems: 501500, 501501, 501502,
501503, and 501830.
There are two ways to determine a processor's "stepping":
1. On the CPU chip itself (top and bottom sides).
2. A software utility that reads Intel proprietary
information stored in the CPU.
Please use the following table to determine which CPU IC to use
in each socket of a 202619 CPU board (60/90, 66/100, or 66/133).
These are the ONLY acceptable combinations. If a combination is
not listed here, do NOT use it.
PCBA part number 202619, built for 100MHz or 133 MHz CPUs (e.g.
202619-113), should NOT be downgraded in speed to use the B1 or
B3 CPU steppings. If they are, the boards will work with a
single CPU but will not work correctly with dual CPUs.

The following additions do not use the P5ID.EXE file to view the
stepping. You must look at the processor chip to identify the
stepping.

For additional information on dual processor configurations, see
Technical Bulletin # 1286.
Contact AST's Technical Support at (800) 727-1278 to verify that
the processor board in your system is at the correct revision
level to support dual processors.
File P5ID.EXE identifies the primary CPU's stepping. This file
