IBM ServeRAID SynchVerify/Update Diskette README for OS2 The SynchVerify Utility is to be used with IBM PC ServeRAID Adapters to determine whether the RAID-5 logical drives have ever been synchronized. RAID-5 logical drives must be synchronized to ensure that the RAID-5 parity correctly reflects the data. NOTE: WHEN LOGICAL DRIVES ARE DEFINED, REFER TO THE SERVERAID USER'S GUIDE FOR THE PROPER SYNCHRONIZATION PROCEDURES REQUIRED TO ENSURE DATA INTEGRITY IN THE FUTURE. Once RAID-5 logical drives have been synchronized, they are synchronized until redefined. The utility consists of the following two tools: 1. SYNCV1 - Synchronization Verification Utility 2. SYNCV2 - Synchronization Tool The Synchronization Verification Utility is run to determine whether the logical drives are synchronized. If the RAID-5 logical drives are synchronized, no further action is necessary. If the Synchronization Verification Utility identifies that one or more of the RAID-5 logical drives may not be synchronized, then downtime must be scheduled to run the SYNCV2 tool to synchronize all the RAID-5 logical drives. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 are executed with the same parameters. The following provides the correct syntax: o run from a NT command prompt type "syncv1 n sn" "syncv2 n sn" where n is the adapter number. and sn is the serial number of the server Adapter Number can be obtained by running ipsradm.exe loacated on this diskette in the a:\os2 directory. The SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 utilities will automatically perform verification or synchronization on all logical drives attached to the adapter. If multiple adapters are installed, then the SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 command will need to be executed again for each adapter using the correct adapter number. The SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 will automatically create a log for each adapter and server serial number. The log filename has the following format: XXXXXXXy.lg1 for SYNCV1 XXXXXXXy.lg2 for SYNCV2 XXXXXXX = system serial number y = adapter number If the utility is run on the same adapter and server serial number, then it will obtain one backup copy. The backup copy will have the same filename format except with .ol1 for SYNCV1 extension and .ol2 extension for SYNCV2. Instructions 1. Insert this diskette in the floppy drive on the Netware Server. 2. To determine if the RAID-5 logical drive is synchronized issue the following command for each RAID-5 logical drive. load a:ipssend synch N drive D nofix where N is Adapter Number and D is the RAID-5 logical drive number 3. On the screen you will get one of the following messages: -- "synchronization complete" means that your RAID-5 logical drive is synchronized. -- "Synchronization terminated abnormally on logical drive # Status: Stopped due to Bad Parity Stripe Inconsistent Stripe Number: ####" This means that this RAID-5 logical drive is not synchronized. If you get this message on any of your RAID-5 logical drives You MUST schedule the following. a. Run a full backup of all RAID-5 logical drives b. Down the server and boot to this diskette. c. Run SYNCV1 which will confirm the need for synchronization and capture the Event logs. When it tells you to run a tape backup ignore as you will have done this in a previous step. d. Then you will have to run SYNCV2 to actually synchronize the RAID-5 logical drives. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 are executed with the same parameters. The following provides the correct syntax: o run from a DOS command prompt type "syncv1 n sn" "syncv2 n sn" where n is the adapter number. and sn is the serial number of the server Adapter Number can be obtained from ServeRAID monitor utility located on the PC ServeRAID Driver and Utility Diskette that ships with the adapter. This diskette is also available on the IBM web site. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 0. Insert this diskette in the floppy drive Make sure to leave the diskette in the drive while you are running SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 as it copies log files there. 1. Open a SCO Unix Command prompt window. 2. Make a temporary directory to copy the utilities. mkdir /synch 3. Change directories to this directory. cd /synch 4. Copy the following files from the floppy drive doscp -m a:/sco/syncv1.cmd . doscp -m a:/sco/syncv2.cmd . doscp -r a:/sco/ipssend . chmod +x * 5. Now you can run the utilities as follows: SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 are executed with the same parameters. The following provides the correct syntax: o run from a SCO UNIX command prompt type "ksh ./syncv1.cmd n sn" "ksh ./syncv2.cmd n sn" where n is the adapter number. and sn is the serial number of the server Adapter Number can be obtained by booting to the RAID configuration diskette. If you only have 1 ServeRAID adapter then the adapter number = 1. EX. 1 ServeRAID card the command would be ksh ./syncv1.cmd 1 2312345 If you have more than ServeRAID adapter then you would have to do this for each adapter. ie. run utility with Adapter number=1 then run again with Adapter number =2 and so on. The SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 utilities will automatically perform verification or synchronization on all logical drives attached to the adapter. If multiple adapters are installed, then the SYNCV1 and SYNCV2 command will need to be executed again for each adapter using the correct adapter number.
