This package is required when you install Windows 95/98 without the Product Recovery CD-ROM. What This Package Does ---------------------- The ThinkPad listed below incorporates several new devices that were not available when Windows 95/98 was announced. This package provides the supplement files to support new devices and fix some problems for Windows 95/98 users. The following model is supported: - ThinkPad 390X To determine if you have to update the supplement files or not, please refer to the "Summary of Changes" section. To update the supplement files, please refer to the "Installation Guide" section. Released Versions ----------------- Version 1.9 Initial release for ThinkPad 390X Version 2.3 Problem fixes Summary of Changes ------------------ Where: Package version (for example, 1.00 means Version 1.00) (New) New function or enhancement (Fix) Correction to existing function <1.9> - (New) Support for ThinkPad 390X <2.3> - (Fix) The F8 key has to be depressed during the Windows 95 unattended installation. Without depressing it within just a few seconds, the entire installation process must be restarted from scratch. To fix this problem, whole the installation procedures are changed. - (Fix) There is a conflict with Margi DVD-to-go and IBM 10/100 EtherJet CardBus. Installation Guide ------------------ (Note) - To determine if you have to update the supplement files or not, please refer to the "Summary of Changes" section. - If you use the Product Recovery CD-ROM shipped with your ThinkPad to restore the Windows 95/98 preload environment, you don't need this package. This package is required when you install Windows 95/98 without the Product Recovery CD-ROM. ------------------------- How to install Windows 98 ------------------------- 1. Copy all the cabinet files and installation programs to your hard disk. 1.1) Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\WIN98) and make sure enough hard disk space is available to store the cabinet files and installation programs (the required free space varies depending on the language of Windows 98). 1.2) Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from the \WIN98 directory of Windows 98 retail CD-ROM. Type "COPY src_cd:\WIN98\*.* destination" and press Enter. Where src_cd is the drive letter of CD-ROM drive (e.g. D, E,..) and destination is the drive letter and temporary directory made in step 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN98) 2. Copy updated files from Windows 95/98 supplement file diskette to the temporary directory. 2.1) Put the Windows 95/98 supplement file diskette into the floppy drive. 2.2) From a command prompt, type in the following and press enter: COPY A:\WIN98\PCMCIA\*.* destination Where destination is the drive letter and temporary directory made in step 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN98). 2.3) Once all the files are copied, remove the diskette from the floppy drive. 3. Start Installation from the temporary directory. 3.1) Run "SETUP.EXE" in the temporary directory. 3.2) Refer to the Windows 98 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation. Next step is to install some fix modules on Windows 98. 4. Install PC Card driver fix. 4.01) Start Windows 98. 4.02) Click on 'Start' -> Settings' -> 'Control Panel'. 4.03) Open the System icon and click on the "Device Manager" tab. 4.04) If you find "Generic CardBus Controller" with a Red Maker, then do steps 4-05 to 4-07 to enable else skip to step 4-8. 4.05) Select the "Generic CardBus Controller" with has Red Maker and click on the 'Properties' button. 4.06) Click "Enable Device" and click OK. 4.07) Shutdown and restart the computer. 4.08) Click on 'Start' -> Settings' -> 'Control Panel'. 4.09) Open the System icon and click on the "Device Manager" tab. 4.10) Expand the "PCMCIA socket" section. 4.11) Select one of the "Generic CardBus Controller" devices and click on the 'Properties' button. 4.12) Click on the "Driver" tab. 4.13) Click on the "Update Driver..." button. 4.14) Click on the "Next" button. 4.15) Click on the "Next" button. 4.16) Click on the "Specify a location" button. 4.17) Enter the location of the Windows 98 installation directory from step 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN98) and click on the "Next" button. 4.18) Click on "Next" button to update. 4.19) Click on "Finish" button. 4.20) Click on "Close" button in the Texas Instruments PCI-1251B CardBus Controller Properties dialog box. 4.21) Select the other "Generic CardBus Controller" and click on the 'Properties' button. 4.22) Repeat steps 4-12 to 4-20. ------------------------- How to install Windows 95 ------------------------- The following versions of Windows 95 are available for your computer: - Retail Release Version (OSR0) - Service Pack Version 1 (OSR1) - OEM Service Release Version 2 without USB Supplement (OSR2) - OEM Service Release Version 2 with USB Supplement (OSR2.1) - OEM Service Release Version 2.5 (OSR2.5) The OSR0 is an off-the-shelf version of Windows 95 and is available at any retail store. The OSR1 can be downloaded from the Microsoft Internet home page (URL http://www.microsoft.com). The OSR2.x is available only as preloaded versions. Your Version of Windows 95 -------------------------- You can check which version of Windows 95 you are using by clicking on Start and moving the cursor to Settings and Control Panel, and then double-clicking on System. You can check the version in this window. Read the numbers under "System." - 4.00.950 means that it is Windows 95 OSR0. - 4.00.950a means that it is Windows 95 OSR1. - 4.00.950B means that it is Windows 95 OSR2 or OSR2.1. - 4.00.950C means that it is Windows 95 OSR2.5. How to install Windows 95 OSR0 or OSR1 -------------------------------------- 1. If needed, apply Windows 95 Service Pack 1 available from Microsoft Internet home page: http:\\www.microsoft.com 5. If more hard drive free space is needed, remove all the files in the temporary directory and the directory itself after installation is completed. 6. If you attach the system to a port replicator follow the steps below to enable the "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller" under docked: 6.01) Start Windows 95 while connected to the port replicator. 6.02) Click on 'Start' -> Settings' -> 'Control Panel'. 6.03) Open the 'Add New Hardware' icon 6.04) Click "Next" and then select "No, not to search for new hardware" and then click "Next". 6.05) When the "Add New Hardware Wizard" shows "Select the type of hardware you want to install", select "PCMCIA socket" and click "Next" to continue. 6.06) Select "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller" then click "Next" and follow the directions on the screen. 6.07) Shutdown and restart system. Enable the second "PCIC compatible pcmcia controller" by choosing "Dock1 (Current)" then following the directions on the screen. When prompted, shutdown and restart system. 6.08) Double click "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller" that has yellow mark sign 6.09) Click "Undocked" to disable the device. Then click "Resources" 6.10) Set "Setting based on:" to "Basic configuration 5". Then click "Change Setting" and change the "Value" to "3E4-3E5". Click "OK" and follow the direction. 6.11) Shutdown and Restart system How to install Windows 95 OSR2.1 ------------------------------------------------ 1. Copy all the cabinet files and installation programs to your hard disk. 1.1) Make a temporary directory (for instance, C:\WIN95) and make sure enough hard disk space is available to store the cabinet files and installation programs (the required free space vary depending on the language of Windows 95). 1.2) Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from the \WIN95 directory of Windows 95 retail CD. Start Installation from the temporary directory. 3.1) Run "SETUP.EXE" in the temporary directory. 3.2) Refer to the Windows 95 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation. Next step is to install some fix modules on Windows 95 OSR2.1. 4. Install PC Card driver fix. 4.1) Start Windows 95 while connected to the port replicator. 4.2) Click on 'Start' -> Settings' -> 'Control Panel'. 4.3) Open the System icon and click on the "Device Manager" tab. 4.4) Expand the "PCMCIA socket" section. 4.5) Select "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller" and click on 'Remove'. 4.6) Shutdown and restart the computer. 5. Install USB driver fix. 5.1) Insert Windows 95 CD-ROM into CD-ROM drive. 5.2) Run "D:\other\usb\usbsupp.exe" from Windows 95 CD-ROM (assuming the CDROM drive letter is D:). 5.3) Shutdown and restart the computer. 5.4) Click on "Start". 5.5) Select "Settings" and click on "Control Panel". 5.6) Double click on "System" and click on "Device Manager" tab. 5.7) Double click on "Other Devices". 5.8) Double click on one of the "PCI Universal Serial Bus". 5.9) Click on "Driver" tab. 5.10) Click on "Update Driver..." button. 5.11) Select "Yes (Recommended)" and click on "Next" button. 5.12) Type "tgt_drv:\tgt_dir" in the Location and click on "OK" button. tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: Drive letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g. C:\WIN95) 5.13) Click on "Finish" button. 5.14) If 'uhcd.sys' is not found, type "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM" in the "Copy file from:" and click on "OK" button. 5.15) Click on "Close" button in the Properties dialog box. 5.16) Shutdown and restart the computer. (OSR2.1/OSR1) machine.inf: Let win95 recognize Intel PIIX4, 430TX, 440BX, and then win95 can load the relative drivers. mshdc.inf: Let win95 recognize Intel 82371AB IDE BUS Master Controller, and then win95 can load the relative drivers. 2. USB patch. (OSR2.1) usb.inf: Let win95 recognize Intel 82371AB USB and win95 can load relative drivers. 3. PCMCIA patch. (OSR2.1) pcmcia.inf: Let win95 recognize TI TI1250,TI1251B PCMCIA controller and load its drivers. pci.vxd, cbss.vxd, configmg.vxd, pccard.vxd: the virtual drivers of TI1250,TI1251B. zvenable.vxd: Let win95 can set ZV card register when ZV card insert. 4.
