DB2 OLAP Server Installation Guide

Read the installation checklist

This checklist summarizes the major steps of installing DB2 OLAP Server and DB2 OLAP Integration Server:

• Verify that you have the hardware and software required by DB2 OLAP Server and DB2 OLAP Integration Server. See Chapter 3, Hardware and software Requirements.
• Determine what products and features that you purchased and are entitled to install.
• Determine what free features and options you want to install:
  • IBM DB2 OLAP Server Miner is a no-cost add-on feature of DB2 OLAP Server that automatically mines through large volumes of OLAP data and identifies and reports on specific elements that represent the most outstanding, and unexpected, pieces of information. You can expose problems and opportunities that were previously hidden and act on them quickly. For information about installing OLAP Miner, see Installing DB2 OLAP Server Miner on Windows and Installing DB2 OLAP Server Miner on AIX.
  • You can place the installation files for the client components on a network so that your users can install the clients without having a CD-ROM. For more information, see Setting up client installation from a network file server
  • If you choose the Typical or Compact options during installation, DB2 OLAP Server installs only a subset of the documentation. To install all the documentation, choose Custom and select the books that you want.
• If you have an earlier version of DB2 OLAP Server on your computer, prepare for migration:
  • Back up your previous installation directory, or at least following files:
    • Your data
    • Essbase.sec
    • license.*
  • Migrate your Relational Storage Manager (RSM) applications to the Multidimensional Storage Manager (MSM) before installing Version 8.1.

    Caution:
    The RSM is withdrawn from Version 8.1. If you are upgrading from DB2 OLAP Server Version 7.1 or earlier, and you have you have applications that use the RSM, you must migrate them to the MSM in Version 7.1 before installing Version 8.1, or you will lose data. See Migrate from RSM to MSM before upgrading to Version 8.1 for more information.

  • If you installed the OLAP Miner at the Version 7.1 level, back up the OLAP Miner configuration files for both the server and clients. The OLAP Minre server configuration file is omserver.cfg and the file for the clients is omclient.cfg.
  • Version 7.1 editions of OLAP Miner and Information Catalog Manager (ICM) are not uninstalled automatically. If you have the version 7.1 edition of OLAP Miner installed on your system, or the copy of ICM that was shipped with version 7.1 of DB2 OLAP Server, and you don't want either of these products in your version 8.1 environment, delete them before installing version 8.1. The Version 8.1 installation program does not uninstall these products, even though it removes the shortcuts from the Start menu.
• Stop any OLAP services that are running.
• Install the server components and client components. See either Chapter 4, Installing on Windows or Chapter 5, Installing on AIX, Solaris Operating Environment, and HP-UX. If you want to make the Windows clients available on a LAN so your users can download and install them without a CD-ROM, see Setting up client installation from a network file server.
• Install Java for both DB2 OLAP Server and DB2 OLAP Integration Server. See Chapter 6, Installing and configuring Java.
• If you want to install DB2 OLAP Server Miner, see Installing DB2 OLAP Server Miner on Windows or Installing DB2 OLAP Server Miner on AIX.
• If you installed the SQL Interface, configure it and set up ODBC using the instructions in Chapter 7, Configuring the SQL Interface
• If you installed DB2 OLAP Integration Server, create metadata catalogs. See Chapter 9, Creating OLAP Metadata Catalogs for DB2 OLAP Integration Server.
• If you installed DB2 OLAP Integration Server, configure your relational data sources and set up ODBC by following the instructions in Chapter 8, Configuring data sources for DB2 OLAP Integration Server.
• Set up the sample applications. See Chapter 10, Setting up the sample applications.
• Migrate your applications to Version 8.1, if any. See Chapter 11, Upgrading and migrating from earlier versions.
