IbmALS plugin with Adobe Reader 9.3.3 (or greater) causes Library Server and Softcopy Reader to Abend -- with total shutdown of Browser in the case of the former ALS_20090721 . When IbmAls is called upon to search a PDF that does not contain the necessary Index, a dialog is displayed that reads "This PDF does not contain an Index for the IBM Advanced Linguistics Search". When Reader (and Acrobat) 9.x is used with IbmAls version 1.4.0, the dialog is not displayed and Reader becomes unstable. ref. "No index" dialog display causes failure (Defect 4497) . In some cases, the presence of a non-displayable character (/1) in the Topic Title (displayed in the Search Results Dialog), results in IbmAls failing to find the Topic in the document and results in "Could not locate the topic in the PDF Outline tree" /1. usually displayed as the "Latin small letter y with diaersis" ref. Outline Topic titles that are unicode are not being recognized (Defect 4498) . When the cursor is 'hovered' over a Topic Title (in the Search Results Dialog) that is too long to be displayed, Reader 9.x attempts to display a fly-over dialog containing the full Title. This action results in focus changing from the "Search Results" Dialog to the "IBM Advanced Linguistic Search" dialog. ref. Rollover of long titles -- causes Results dialog to loose focus" (Defect 4499) . Adobe limits the size of Outline (TOC) entries to 125 characters (if the text was entered as Unicode) and 254 (if entered as single-byte text). IbmAls 1.4.0 does not take this limit into account when matching a Topic Title with that found in the body of the document. ref. Failure to recognize truncated Outline entries (Defect 4500) Known Problems: . In order to 'paste' Search Terms into the 'Search Term:' box, you must use the Mouse Right button, to activate the edit drop-down menu, and select 'Paste'. ref. Default 'paste' operation does not work in Srch Win (Defect 3453) . Acrobat now allows the user to disable Printing and Editing of the PDF by setting a "Permission's" password. Indexed PDFs that have such a password set can no longer be searched. ref. index unusable after PDF is 'password-protected' (Defect 3527) . Enabling an already indexed PDF for 'Reader Usage Rights' adversely affects searching in the Reader. ref. addition of comments does not affect function (Defect 3722) . In some instances ALS will not be able to accurately determine the location of the Topic on the Page, consequently it will display the full page. ref. Adobe Wordfinder Bug concatenated words (Defect 3399) ref. Fails to find search term in figure (Defect 3434) ref. Fail to locate srch term delimited with u'scores (Defect 3435) ref. Topic Titles with Overscore not recognized. (Defect 3438) ref. Fails to find next topic title (==end of topic) (Defect 3439) ref. Figure Data adversely affect Topic Location (Defect 3441) ref. Scroll alignment for some topics (Defect 3442) ref. Header mistaken for Topic Title (Defect 3446) ref. Hits in other topic to that indicated in Search (Defect 3602) . Pageup/PageDown keys do not work within the Search (results) list ref. Pgup/PgDwn Search Results (Defect 3370) . Search terms containing the '<' character will produce anomalous results. For example "Test" will be treated as a search for "Test<" and "EndTag>" ref. Search terms containing '<' (Defect 3395) . Search terms that are terminated by a colon cannot be found. ref. Fails to find search terms terminated with colon (Defect 3433) . The Scroll Arrows in the Search Results dialog and in the Page Display window do not respond to the normal 'continuous-scroll' operation (ie. keeping the button depressed). However, clicking above or below the scroll 'handle', does result in the normal page-up and page-down actions . PDF files do not clearly differentiate between words that appear in the body of the text, and words that appear in the page header and/or footer. Consequently the search will produce false hits if a search term is present in the page header or footer. . Occasionally Reader (and Acrobat) will appear to be unresponsive, and the user will be obliged to wait until the Reader regains focus. ALS_20071012 Version 1.4.0 . When in a 'stand-alone' configuration (ie. Not inside a Web Browser page), excessively long Topic titles displayed in the Results Dialog no longer need more than one 'click' in order to be selected. ref. Results Dlg. Long entries need two clicks (Defect 3430) . When opening the Search dialog, the cursor is now automatically placed in the search entry box. The search action is now activated by the Enter key and the 'Search', 'Reset' and 'Help' buttons are now visible when the Results dialog is topmost. ref. Auto position cursor in search area (Defect 3603) ref. Search should be activated by 'Enter' key (Defect 3604) ref. Adjust positioning of 'Search Results' dialog (Defect 3786) . If the user attempts to search a PDF that was not indexed with the IBM Document Indexer tool, the user may now choose to use the Adobe search tool, or submit the PDF to IBM for indexing. ref. "No DII index" dialog offer Normal Adobe search. (Defect 3609) . 'IBM Advanced Linguistics Search' may now be selected from a menu activated by "Right-Mousebutton-Click", in addition to the toolbar and Edit menu ref. New icon / menu entries for version 8.0 (Defect 3627) . ALS can now accurately determine the location of the Topic on the Page in the following instances: ref. Fails to find Topic Title prefixed with a '&' (Defect 3436) ref. Topic Titles with '(' and ')' (Defect 3437) ref. Topic Titles with embedded punctuation, not recog. (Defect 3440) . The 'About' dialog now displays the version of the Indexer used to index the current PDF. ref. Report index CT level in the 'about' box (Defect 3867) . Search terms containing leading blanks no longer cause the search to fail ref. Leading blanks in search term cause ABEND. (Defect 3706) . The scroll keys in the Results dialog now work. This appears to be related to an Adobe bug that is now fixed in Acrobat/Reader Version 8.x ref. Scroll keys in Search Results not work correctly (Defect 3787) . Selecting Topics whose title contains an embedded "=" no longer cause subsequent selections to fail. ref. Page display fails after first search hit (Defect 3892) . PDFs created using Microsoft Word with PDFmaker Version 7.0 have Topic Titles that contain a trailing blank. This often causes the search to fail in some way. The presence of these abnormalities has been accommodated by IBMALS, and such search failures no longer occur. ref. MsWrd/PDFMaker 7.0 trailing blank in TopicTitle (Defect 3629) . Opening and searching multiple PDFs often resulted in misleading search results. As a temporary measure, searching is now limited to the last opened (ie. topmost) PDF. Searching another opened PDF will require that that PDF be re-opened. ALS_20060405 Version 1.2.0, 1.3.0 . Long entries (ie Topic Titles) in the Results dialog are truncated, when the cursor (mouse) passes over such entries the full text appears in a 'fly-over box'. When Acrobat is running inside a browser page, this behavior was interpreted as a 'select' and consequently the indicated Topic was displayed. This behavior has been corrected (however, see Defect 3430 in 'Known Problems') ref. Results Dialog -- Mouse-flyover (Defect 3364) . When in stand-alone, you could kill the results dialog, and any subsequent 'entry and search' from the Search dialog would result in a new Results dialog being created. When running in a browser window, this behavior was not seen. This behavior has been corrected, the search dialog can now be 're-used' ref. Reuse of Results dialog fails in Browser (Defect 3367) . In some instances ALS was not be able to accurately determine the location of the Topic on the Page, consequently it displayed the full page. This behavior is caused by a number of processing errors, the following have been corrected: ref. Topic titles with mixed emdash, endash, hyphen (Defect 3394) ref. Revision Bar in Topic Title (Defect 3397) ref. Hyphen with spaces in Topic Title (Defect 3398) ref. Fails to recognize/process (R) in Topic Title (Defect 3401) ref. Topic Title contain 'C++' not recognized (Defect 3402) ref. U'scores in Topic Title not recognized (Defect 3448) . Some search operations (from within a Web Browser) were adversely affected by the processing of 'special' characters. These failings have now been rectified. ref. c?t does not work in browser mode (Defect 3400) ref. Hexed chars (e.g. %26) stripped from PDF URL (Defect 3413) . Internal processing errors would sometimes result in the message "Could not locate the topic in the PDF Outline tree" being displayed. These errors have now been addressed. ref. Fails to find valid Topic in Outline Tree (Defect 3403) ref. Need test for "End of topic title" (Defect 3407) ref. Fails to find end of last topic in outline tree (Defect 3408) ref. Topic parent of "1.0" not recognized (Defect 3420) . If, when working in a Browser Session, the Results dialog was minimized, then further use of IBMALS was not possible. This behavior has now been corrected. ref. IBMALS cannot be reused during an LS session (Defect 3414) . There was no on-line help for the IBMALS search. The search methodology and the options available to the user, are identical to those in the Library Server. Therefore IBMALS now uses the appropriate section from the Library Server "Getting Started" document ref. Add Help -- pntr to LS GetStart, Srch a Doc (Defect 3416) ref. Add 'Help' button to Search Dialog (Defect 3470) . PDFs produced from applications other than Adobe Distiller, sometimes use 'unusual' methods to construct the document. These resulted in PDFs that could not be fully exploited by IBMALS. The analysis and processing capabilities of IBMALS have now been improved to cover these differences in document architecture. ref. Fails to find topics in 'brochures' (Defect 3449) ref. Fails to process all forms of page ref. (Defect 3450) ALS_20060814 . support for launching via the Softcopy Reader (SCR) Version 3.6 (SCRV3_081506) ALSP_20051212 Version 1.1.0 . IBMALS is now able to differentiate between Topics with identical titles. ref. (Defect 3363) . The use of Boolean Characters in search terms (as per the Library Server Search) is now supported. ref. (Defect 3365) . Search hits in neighboring topics are now highlighted correctly. ref. (Defect 3366) . Trailing whitespace (spaces, carriage-returns, etc.) are now automatically removed from search terms. ref. (Defect 3368) . Scrolling to the Title of the topic containing the search hits has been considerably improved. ALSP_09252005 - Initial beta release. ----------------------------------------------------------- LIMITATIONS ----------------------------------------------------------- * The IBM Advanced Linguistics Search will only work with PDFs indexed with the IBM Document Indexer tool. This version (1.4.1) is intended for use with Adobe Reader/Acrobat Version 9.x, not 8.x or 7.x Normally, selecting a Topic from the 'Search Results' dialog will result in scrolling of the appropriate page to place the topic title at the top of the display. In the event that the first 'hit' is not on the page containing the Topic Title, the full page (containing the hit) will be displayed. Users of the Reader can now add comments to PDFs that have 'Reader Enabled Usage Rights' (usually done via Adobe Acrobat). However, indexing such a PDF will insert an index into the PDF. Such changes are not considered to be benign and therefore result in the PDF losing it's 'Reader Enabled Usage Rights'. ----------------------------------------------------------- UPDATES ----------------------------------------------------------- For updates to this plug-in, please periodically visit the BookManager web pages for the Advanced Linguistic Search Plug-in for Adobe at: http://www.ibm.com/software/applications/office/bkmgr/adobeplugin.html ----------------------------------------------------------- GETTING HELP WITH BOOKMANAGER PRODUCTS ----------------------------------------------------------- This section contains information on how to obtain support and the latest corrective service for BookManager products.
