ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT

This application note aids in the installation of the SMC

EliteCard Ethernet PC (PCMCIA) Card on your Hewlett-Packard

OmniBook 4000 and 600 Notebook PC.

As you work your way through this application note you will notice

that many of the details are specific to the HP Omnibooks. It is

beyond the scope of this application note to provide all the

details of the SMC Ethernet card. To aid in understanding and

prevent damage, please read the SMC EliteCard User Guide included

  with the card.

It is assumed that you have some experience with MS-DOS (R),

Windows for Workgroups, and some experience setting up a network

system. It is beyond the scope of this paper to introduce the

many different types of networks available and to configure

Windows for Workgroups for those networks.

MINIMUM CONFIGURATION

The following table outlines the minimum configuration required to

  install the EM1144.

HP OmniBook 4000 * 8MB of system memory

  Notebook PC

                     * Windows for Workgroups 3.11 as preinstalled

                     with the OmniBook

                     * CardSoft Version 2.1 or greater as

                     *    User Guide

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

The instructions for installing the PCMCIA card are divided into

three parts. In Part 1, you will be slightly modifying the PCMCIA

socket services default configuration of the HP OmniBook 4000

Notebook PC. You will be shown step by step how to accomplish

this. In Part 2, you will then install the EliteCard drivers

using the standard installation diskette that comes with the card.

Part 3 gives instruction on setting up Windows for Workgroups

network support for the NDIS drivers used with Lan Manager.

  PART 1:VERIFYING THE OMNIBOOK CONFIGURATION

Stop:Before going further it is recommended

that you make a complete backup copy of

your hard disk. If you can't make a

complete backup of the entire hard disk,

                    backup the AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS and

                    the WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI files. These

files will be modified. If there is a

problem you will be able to recover your

                    original configuration by replacing any

                    modified files with the backups.

  1. Turn on the OmniBook and enter DOS. You may have to exit

Windows for Workgroups (hereafter called WfW) to enter DOS.

  2. Change the directory to C:\CARDSOFT.

  3. Using the DOS type command or other viewer verify that the

file CSALLOC.INI exists and that the following information

exists. Critical information is highlighted. Other lines may

have changed or have been modified. This should not present a

       problem.

You have just verified that socket services will not ignore the

appropriate resources needed when installing the PCMCIA card. In

order for any changes to become effective, the system must be

rebooted. However, you may wait until after completing Part 2

  before booting.

  Now to the next step.

PART 2:INSTALLING THE SMC DRIVERS FOR NOVELL NETWORK

In Part 2 you will be installing the LAN drivers specific to the

SMC EtherCard for the Novell Network operating system. This

section is not intended as a tutorial on installing the Novell

network. Please refer to the Novell Netware User Guides and on-

line Help for the installation details.

  1. At this point you should still be in DOS. If you haven't done

so already change the directory of the OmniBook to the root

directory by typing in C:\ [Enter].

  2. Insert the EZStart diskette provided with the EliteCard in the

diskette drive. Change the drive to A:.

  3. Type ezstart at the A:prompt. On the OB600 only you will get

a message in a dialog box that will read "NO SMC cards found".

You can safely ignore this message.

  4. Use the cursor keys to select the Drivers option. Push

       .

  5. Select "Novell NetWare DOS (ODI Workstation)". Press .

  6. When the program prompts you type in the directory you want

the ODI drivers installed. For the purpose of clarity and

ease of installation this guide will use c:\smc\odi. You may

       use whatever directory you prefer.

  7. Use the Tab key to tab to Copy Files. Push . You

should get a dialog box indicating "copy complete". Push

       .

  8. If a dialog box says "This driver is compatible with PC

Agent/SNMP. Do you want to install PC Agent/SNMP also?", tab

       to "NO" and push .

  9. You have completed copying the appropriate files to the disk.

Tab to "Cancel" and push . The Network Operating

System Selection dialog box will appear again. Tab to "Cancel"

and push . Now tab to "Exit" and push to exit

       the program.

Note:At this time, check the date stamp on

the SMC80PC.COM driver. It should be 4-

24-94 (v1.01) or later. If it is not,

call SMC technical support or download

the latest driver available from the SMC

                    BBS system.

  10. If you are using VLM skip this step. If you are using NETX

edit your autoexec.bat file to read (where

is the name of the directory that contains the netware client

       software):

               c:\\lsl

               c:\smc\odi\smc80PC

               rem pcagent pcagent.cfg

               c:\\ipxodi

               c:\\netx

               f:

               // or LU of server

               login

  10. If you are using VLM edit your autoexec.bat file to read

(where is the name of the directory that

       contains the netware client software):

               c:\\lsl

               c:\smc\odi\smc80PC

               rem pcagent pcagent.cfg

               c:\\vlm

               f:

               // or LU of server

               login

  11. Create or modify the NET.CFG file to read:

               #

               # NET.CFG File for SMC80PC

               #

               Link Driver SMC80PC

                    Frame Ethernet_802.3

                    Port #1 320

                    Mem #1 000D2000 2000/10

               # Int #1 3

               # PS/2 Slot ?

               #

               # NET.CFG end

               #

This completes the installation of the SMC EliteCard ODI drivers.

Skip the next part if you don't need the WfW NDIS drivers.

PART 3:INSTALLING THE WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS DRIVERS

In Part 3 you will be installing or modifying the WfW network

drivers. You will also learn the installation setup parameters

  required for the EliteCard.

This section is not intended as a tutorial on installing the WfW

network. Please refer to the WfW User Guide and on-line Help for

  the installation details.

  1. If you are in Windows, exit and go to the root directory of

       the C:drive.

  2. Insert the EZStart diskette provided with the EliteCard in the

diskette drive. Change the drive to A:.

  3. Type ezstart at the A:prompt. On the OB600 you will get a

message in a dialog box that will read "NO SMC cards found".

You can safely ignore this message.

  4. Use the cursor keys to select the Drivers option. Push

       .

  5. Select "Microsoft Windows for Workgroups v3.11 (NDIS Driver)".

       Press .

  6. When the program prompts you type in the directory you want

the NDIS drivers installed. For the purpose of clarity and

ease of installation this guide will use c:\smc\ndis. You may

       use whatever directory you prefer.

NOTE:At this time check the date stamp on the

SMC80PC.DOS driver. It should be 6-20-

94 or later. If it is not call SMC

technical support or download the latest

driver available from the SMC BBS

                    system.

  10. Change the logical unit back to the C:drive by typing C:.

Start the Windows for Workgroup by typing WIN .

  11. Close all applications that may be open and double click on

the Network program group. Now double click on the Network

Setup Icon. This gets you into the Network Setup program.

  12. Now click on the Networks... button. If you want to install

anything other than the Microsoft Windows Network you will

have to refer to the manual included in the Network

installation guides provided by the desired Network Operating

System. However, if you plan to install the Microsoft Windows

Network, fill in the button Install Microsoft Windows Network

by clicking on the button to the left of the message.

  13. Click on the OK button.

  14. If you want to Share your files and printer(s) with others,

click on the Sharing button and fill in the appropriate dialog

       boxes.

  15. Next, after returning to the dialog box entitled Network

Sharing, click on the Drivers button. The Network Drivers

       dialog box will appear.

  16. There should be no adapters present. Remove the driver

present. Now click on the Add Adapter button. When the Add

Network Adapter dialog box appears, choose Unlisted or Updated

Network Adapter by highlighting the field and then clicking

       OK.

  17. Now type in the location of the directory where you installed

the SMC drivers. If you followed the above default locations

in step 6, the directory will be C:\SMC\NDIS. Click on the OK

button. When the Network adapter has been found the Unlisted

or Updated Network Adapter dialog box appears and the SMC

EliteCard PCMCIA (SMC 8016C/PC or 8016T/PC) is highlighted.

       Click on the OK button.

  18. Now add any additional Protocols you may need, if any. The

default is the Microsoft NetBEUI protocol but you may require

additional ones. Check with your network administrator for

details about your network. After completing this step return

to the Network Drivers dialog box.

  19. There are no additional setup steps required for the SMC

EliteCard. The driver will take card of selecting all

       resources (see Other Considerations below).

  20. Click on the Close button of the Network Drivers dialog box.

  21. Click on the OK button of the Network Setup dialog box.

  22. The Network Setup will install the drivers. During the

installation, the Install Driver window may give the message

Insert C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS or a disk with the updated or vendor

provided NDISHLP.SYS file in:An A:\ prompt will be

highlighted inside the text box. Type C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS

inside the text box. The dialog box may also ask you to

identify the location of the NDIS driver. This driver will be

located in the directory you specified earlier. If you

followed the default, type C:\SMC\NDIS into the dialog box and

       press [Enter].

  23. Windows Setup will now ask if you want to restart your

computer or continue. Click on the Restart Computer button.

Wait until Windows restarts. You will probably find a number

of error messages indicating that the Network is not present.

Click OK for now until WfW starts.

The Network has not yet started. Because the HP OmniBook

provides multiboot AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, the

AUTOEXEC.BAT file created by the installation program did not

replace the existing one. You will have to add a line in your

AUTOEXEC.BAT file that reads NET START. The default location

is the first line of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This location is

okay but other line locations in the AUTOEXEC.BAT will work

       just as well.

  24. If you haven't already done so insert the EliteCard PCMCIA

card into one of the OmniBook 4000 PCMCIA slots. You can now

reboot the computer by turning the HP OmniBook Notebook PC off

       then on.

After the NET START command is executed you will be able to read

the version number of the SMC ElitCard PCMCIA DOS NDIS Driver

(NDIS) version. This version should be v1.02 (940620) or later.

Now WfW should start and ask you for a password. Passwords are

optional but whatever password you use, don't forget it. It is

difficult to get around the password protection if you forget this

  vital piece of information.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Now that you've gotten your card installed there are some

  considerations to think about.

  * This application note assumed you will use the Card and Socket

Services included with the HP OmniBook Notebook PC. If, for

any reason, you elected not to use Card and Socket Services,

you will have to load the correct driver. This driver,

sometimes called a point enabler, writes directly to the

PMCMIA controller chip set. The HP OmniBook 4000 Notebook PC

contains a standard VADEM PCMCIA controller chip and is

supported by most card vendors. The driver is included on the

Megahertz installation diskette. However, if Card and Socket

Services is disabled, other PCMCIA cards may not work

properly. HP does not support this configuration.

  * When the HP OmniBook 4000 Notebook PC is suspended, either by

timing out or by pressing the suspend button (upper right

corner of the keyboard), power to the PCMCIA cards is normally

turned off. This conserves power and gives longer battery

life. Losing power normally removes any configuration loaded

on the card and it will not respond to the network after

coming out of suspend. However, the SMC drivers are capable

of Hot Swapping. This means you can remove power or

physically take the card out of the socket and once power is

reasserted the card will be reconfigured. With this card

there is no need to modify the power setting of the HP

OmniBook 4000 Notebook PC. However, if you elect to keep

power on the card for some reason you can do this by changing

the BIOS setup. Press [Fn] F2 when the machine is on, enter

the POWER screen (press F5), and enable PCMCIA Power During

Suspend. Please refer to the OmniBook 4000 Operating Guide

for more information. If power during suspend is not enabled,

the machine will have to reboot after each suspend for the

       card to become initialized.

  * The HP OmniBook 4000 Notebook PC shuts off power to the card

when the power button is pressed or after suspend to disk.

After the computer is turned on power is restored to the card.

The card will return to the state after the NET START command

       is given.

  * The driver along with Card and Socket Services determines the

interrupt, memory base address, and IO location. The

interrupt may conflict the desired interrupt a modem may

require. If this is the case make sure the modem is plugged

in prior to booting the system. This will insure the IRQ

selected is the correct one for the modem.

CONCLUSIONS

In this application note you learned how to install the SMC

EliteCard 8016. You also learned how to install the WfW network

drivers. After the installation you learned about other salient

features of the HP Omnibook by reading the Other Considerations

section. This helped you to become more familiar with your HP

OmniBook 4000 or 600 Notebook PC and network usage.

Although this application note configured WfW network using the

NDIS driver, much of what is covered is applicable to ODI and

other protocol drivers. If later you find yourself having to

change network protocol, this application note may help you.
