Triple Your Pleasure
If doubling your current disk drive storage some time in the future isn't enough for you, you might want to try tripling it now. The new Expanz! Disk Expander Card is a new half card for IBM PC XT and AT computers that fits into any expansion slot and increases the capacity of hard disks up to three times. The card's producer, InfoChip, claims it is the first random access data compression add-in card designed for personal computers.
Expanz! provides realtime automatic compression and decompression (requiring no host or user intervention), and features a unique autosensing capability that allows pass-through of incompressible data. The Expanz! card works with any storage device, including hard disks (SCSI, ESDI, and so forth), floppy disks, ramdisks, and optical devices, as well as tape drives connected to the floppy or hard disk controller. An MS-DOS 3.0 or higher version of the card will be available in the third quarter of this year, and a 4.0 or higher version will be available in the fourth quarter. Both versions will retail for $199.
